The Boat That Rocked

The Boat That Rocked Stills

An all-star cast, a swinging soundtrack, and groovy 60s fashion – what more could you ask for? Oh that’s right, only the wonderful Richard Curtis who gave us the likes of Love Actually and Notting Hill… With all this comes bundles of charm, quotable lines, and more emotional pull than a monkey befriending a tiger cub (and that’s cute – google it).
The plot follows the attempts of a steely-eyed Kenneth Branagh to kill pirate radio, especially the station under the management of Bill Nighy – and of course, all does not go to plan. Throw in some love triangles, inter-DJ rivalry, and a sweet boy growing up on a crazy boat, and you’ll see why this is one of mine, and my family’s, favourites.
It also includes one of my favourite songs, beautifully performed by the talented Chris O’Dowd:

The costumes throughout really evoke the fun, originality of the sixties and provide inspiration for looks to perk up your everyday style. Stick on your false eyelashes, turn up The Beach Boys and leave the winter blues behind…

Bend It Like Beckham

Bend It Like Beckham StillsWith January winding down to a close, I am feeling my New Year’s resolutions beginning to crumble already… What could be better to reignite my get-fit regime than one of the peppiest, funniest, and sportiest films I’ve seen? Bend It Like Beckham is one of my favourites, and one I come back to time and time again. If you haven’t seen it – watch it. Unlike the title suggests, you don’t need to know one thing about football to appreciate this truly British comedy about growing up and finding your way. Plus it is definite motivation to start sports, or just get down to the gym (that is one flat stomach Keira…)! The great soundtrack provides excellent backing for a workout – I always put on Basement Jaxx ‘Red Alert’ when I feel my energy levels dwindling.

The actual sports kit the football girls wear may not be amazing, but if you take inspiration from the bold colours of the saris, and combine it with practical pieces, you can create a bright gym look that you’ll want to show off!

Les Misérables

I’m not sure I’ve gone a day this month without hearing someone singing at least one of the songs from this (or belting them out myself), and with the film coming from the record-breaking musical, I’d expect nothing less. There’s been a lot of question over whether it lives up to the stage version, especially whether the actors can keep up with the songs – I say yes. Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman could not give fuller performances, and even if Russell Crowe has a…different… style, the rest of the cast could be taken as real musical performers. The only fault I would have is the length – so make sure you don’t eat your popcorn in the first 20 minutes! Also, please wear waterproof mascara unless you want to journey home as a panda.

Now, fashion may not be your first thought on seeing this film – the rags of the French peasants don’t scream ‘must-have’ – but the colours, military elements, and use of volume are easily incorporated for a statement January look.

– Red, white, and deep blue
– Military detailing
– Tailored waists
