The Wolf Of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street film stillsIt’s hard to know what to say about The Wolf of Wall Street: amazing and terrifying, hilarious and deeply unsettling, it will have you hooked all the way till the end. It may be three hours long, but you won’t want to miss a minute. The most disconcerting part is DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jordan Belfort, who is just so loathsome, and yet, somehow you are rooting for him to come out on top, to have just one more trick up his Armani sleeve. If this role doesn’t get him an Oscar, I don’t know what will. Not a film for the faint-hearted, The Wolf of Wall Street rattles through drugs, sex, and more drugs at an alarming pace. The effects of this unbelievable excess are presented with such fantastic direction by Scorsese that they are both comic and incredibly traumatic, producing scenes that will stay with me for a long time. This film is a juggernaut – incredible cast, engrossing story, and impeccable production.

The 80s Wall Street power suit is in full force – for today, pair exaggerated shoulders with a slim leg and a killer heel. Margot Robbie also looks stunning throughout as Belfort’s love interest, Naomi, in bold body-con dresses and luxurious leather and silk. Team with a chicly messy chignon and you’ll look a million dollars – no stock brokers required.

Love Actually – Christmas Special

Film stills from Love ActuallyThere’s not much I can say about this film. To me, it is Christmas perfection. Richard Curtis weaves his rom-com magic, intertwining the lives of an all-star cast and their romantic problems in the countdown to Christmas. Yes, it is a bit soppy – but if we can’t get emotional and gooey at Christmas time, when can we? Some people say they have a favourite plot thread in this film, but I’m pretty sure I love them all: from Colin Frissell’s stateside quest for girls, to Colin Firth’s broken Portuguese, I’m smiling all the way through. This film is also the reason that I couldn’t keep a straight face during my Christmas shopping yesterday, as I couldn’t stop picturing Rowan Atkinson while the real-life shop assistant was gift-wrapping my purchase (unfortunately there was no holly involved…)

If you don’t draw inspiration directly from the on-screen fashion, the overall incredible Christmassy-ness will have you ready to deck yourself out in fuzzy knitwear, lashings of festive red, and a good sprinkling of glitter. What you may or may not have noticed is the unbelievable prevalence of turtlenecks – I certainly had not until I saw this post, and they all starting leaping out at me, so pick your favourite! My suggested itinerary for tomorrow: watch Love Actually, drink much mulled wine, sort out all romantic entanglements, wear lovely festive clothes, and remember Christmas Is All Around…

10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You Stills

90s teen movies may be my ultimate guilty pleasure, but 10 Things is top of the list. With the gorgeous Heath Ledger, a baby-faced Joseph Gordon-Levitt, quotable lines, and lots of teen angst, you can’t help but forgive its ‘liberal’ adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. Set in Padua High, the story follows young Bianca and Cameron as they try to set up her fiery sister, Kat, with the dark and mysterious Patrick Verona. Plotting, paintballing, and parties ensue, and it also contains one of the most heart-melting scenes of all-time.

Before I get all starry-eyed over Heath, 10 Things is a 90s fashion capsule, and great inspiration for this summer. Although this decade’s – and this film’s – fashion choices had their ups and downs, 90s is building momentum as a major trend, and is easily incorporated into your wardrobe. You don’t need to stick to one Stratford sister, but blend Kat and Bianca’s style with minimalist shapes meeting sunny prints…

Bend It Like Beckham

Bend It Like Beckham StillsWith January winding down to a close, I am feeling my New Year’s resolutions beginning to crumble already… What could be better to reignite my get-fit regime than one of the peppiest, funniest, and sportiest films I’ve seen? Bend It Like Beckham is one of my favourites, and one I come back to time and time again. If you haven’t seen it – watch it. Unlike the title suggests, you don’t need to know one thing about football to appreciate this truly British comedy about growing up and finding your way. Plus it is definite motivation to start sports, or just get down to the gym (that is one flat stomach Keira…)! The great soundtrack provides excellent backing for a workout – I always put on Basement Jaxx ‘Red Alert’ when I feel my energy levels dwindling.

The actual sports kit the football girls wear may not be amazing, but if you take inspiration from the bold colours of the saris, and combine it with practical pieces, you can create a bright gym look that you’ll want to show off!
