Skyfall film stillsSkyfall takes the James Bond film franchise to the next level. The film goes deeper into the psychology of the ageing spy (Daniel Craig) as he faces the most frighteningly intelligent and powerful villain yet (Javier Bardem). It also explores M’s mysterious past, and the difficulties of personal relationships in MI6. Sam Mendes direction creates stunning scenes, particularly the Shanghai skyscrapers and shots of the Highlands, but keeps the exhilarating stunts and fights that you want from 007. The additions of Ralph Fiennes and Ben Whishaw add fresh dynamics to the team, as does the beautiful Naomie Harris as Eve, the woman that Bond films were waiting for. More than just a femme fatale or damsel in distress, I really look forward to seeing her character develop in further films. This brings me to my only problem with Skyfall; I don’t quite understand the role of Severine (played by the gorgeous Bérénice Marlohe), although she fulfils the typical ‘Bond-girl’ slot wonderfully, her character does seem quite expendable. That said, I can certainly see why it is the highest-grossing film in the UK, and very much look forward to the next instalment.

Whatever my issue with Severine’s character, her wardrobe is stunning – particularly her lust-worthy embellished evening dress. For a range of head-turners, I suggest Forever Unique or Coast’s gowns. Let the oriental settings inspire you with rich colours and intricate patterns, while Eve’s beautifully tailored wardrobe demonstrates a chic, modern look. Accessorise with a Martini – shaken, not stirred.

Priceless (Hors de Prix)

Priceless Stills

So, my exciting news is that I finally joined most of the internet-having world and got Netflix. Which it turns out is great for watching films that you kind of wanted to see, but didn’t get round to at the time, but will watch now because the one you really want to watch isn’t actually on Netflix… In this case, I wanted to watch Heartbreaker (L’Arnacoeur) which is a really enjoyable French rom-com, but – as I’m finding increasingly unsurprising – they didn’t have it, but did suggest the similarly charming Priceless.

Priceless follows the ridiculously gorgeous Audrey Tautou as a gold-digger trying to secure herself a life of Chanel dresses and champagne. On holiday with her much older boyfriend, she mistakes a sweetly socially inept bartender (Gad Elmaleh) for a younger, richer target, and through a series of amusing circumstances the two find themselves battling to out-do each other in the world of ‘old money’. Although predictable, this light-hearted comedy is funny and stylish enough, set in stunning hotels along the French Riviera, but I found it difficult to feel a connection with any of the openly manipulative – or naïve – characters, which means I probably won’t go back and re-watch it.

Tautou’s character is all about slinky dresses, heels, and a chicly dishevelled up-do. In-keeping with the Riviera glamour, she is never underdressed, and, although not practical for every day, does inspire some eye-catching evening looks. So, if you’re not afraid of a low neckline, or making an entrance, here are my pick of the best high-street dresses to help you bag yourself a billionaire – or just the cute bartender…
