The Royal Tenenbaums

The Royal Tenenbaums film stillsThe Royal Tenenbaums is a portrayal of the ultimate dysfunctional family, with an all-star cast and that much-analysed Wes Anderson aesthetic. The film follows a family of geniuses, 20 years on from the reluctant departure of head of the household, Royal (Gene Hackman). The catalogue of characters includes Gwyneth Paltrow as creatively blocked playwright Margot, Luke Wilson as an ex-tennis star, and Ben Stiller as Chas whose paranoia for safety drives him and his twin boys back to the family home. There are loads more names and characters (including Owen Wilson as a cowboy novelist), and the plot weaves around a bit trying to keep all these balls in the air. Anderson’s brand of off-beat humour isn’t for everyone, and, whilst I thoroughly enjoyed much of the film, you can tell why it wasn’t the blockbuster hit of The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Margot’s instant cool will make you want to grab a (faux) fur coat, lots of eye liner, and embrace your inner tortured artiste. Her looks are a quirky blend of 50s and 60s fashion – playing with grown up styles and girly touches, like her signature hair slides. Stripes are a classic for day-to-night chic, and add a pop of pattern to your look, whilst being very easy to wear. The colour palette combines pastel tones with richer colours, making it perfect for this transitional period. Also check out this amazing spread from Elle Ukraine, which channels Margot’s look with a more luxurious twist…

The Talented Mr. Ripley

The Talented Mr. Ripley film stillsSpring has sprung(ish..), so while we all begin to dream about our summer holiday, what better way to indulge in a little getaway fantasy than with the beautiful scenery of Italy in The Talented Mr Ripley. Although it’s the gripping storyline and incredible acting that are the main points of this film, you can’t help but wish you could flit along the Italian coast – albeit without Tom Ripley’s wake of destruction. This psychological thriller follows Matt Damon as Tom, a young man who is mistakenly welcomed into the world of wealth and privilege, and who will do anything to remain there. The brilliant supporting cast of Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour Hoffman are all caught up in Ripley’s web of deceit, as he juggles them, loves them, and tries to avoid their ever-growing suspicions.

Set in the late 1950s, Paltrow’s Marge and Blanchett’s Meredith are incredibly elegant, providing perfect inspiration for a chic, retro spring-summer look. Co-ordinating separates play on the lady-like feel, and Marge’s tie-up shirt with a full midi skirt is very on trend. Add nautical prints and accessories for a touch of the Italian Riviera glamour.

Charlie’s Angels

Charlie's Angels film stillsDisguises, romantic entanglements, and a whole lot of girl power, the 2000 reboot of Charlie’s Angels is the perfect film for a night in with your mates. Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore are the ultimate trio, even if we all have our favourite (totally got to be Liu’s whip-smart Alex). This film is pure, unadulterated fun with dance numbers, sassy comebacks, and over-the-top acting – not to mention the physics-defying fight sequences.

Although the Angels all have different styles, there are some key items you’ll need if you want to join them: a pair of ass-kicking trousers, a killer dress, and some classic noughties tinted sunglasses. A slogan tee or a crop top is also an essential for all Independent Women, and throw on a faded denim jacket for a pinch of Drew’s grungier edge. Complete with a full training in martial arts, bomb disposal, and acrobatics, then you’ll be ready to join America’s most glamorous sleuthing trio…

The Wolf Of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street film stillsIt’s hard to know what to say about The Wolf of Wall Street: amazing and terrifying, hilarious and deeply unsettling, it will have you hooked all the way till the end. It may be three hours long, but you won’t want to miss a minute. The most disconcerting part is DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jordan Belfort, who is just so loathsome, and yet, somehow you are rooting for him to come out on top, to have just one more trick up his Armani sleeve. If this role doesn’t get him an Oscar, I don’t know what will. Not a film for the faint-hearted, The Wolf of Wall Street rattles through drugs, sex, and more drugs at an alarming pace. The effects of this unbelievable excess are presented with such fantastic direction by Scorsese that they are both comic and incredibly traumatic, producing scenes that will stay with me for a long time. This film is a juggernaut – incredible cast, engrossing story, and impeccable production.

The 80s Wall Street power suit is in full force – for today, pair exaggerated shoulders with a slim leg and a killer heel. Margot Robbie also looks stunning throughout as Belfort’s love interest, Naomi, in bold body-con dresses and luxurious leather and silk. Team with a chicly messy chignon and you’ll look a million dollars – no stock brokers required.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes film stillsWe all love a bit of Sherlock. Even 100 years after his creation by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, new incarnations are still popping up (am almost bursting with excitement for the new season of BBC’s Sherlock), and this slick Hollywood reworking Guy Ritchie is a very enjoyable adaptation. Chasing down the ominous Lord Blackwood, Robert Downey Jr. adds a more ‘action man’ side to Holmes, as well as keeping the eccentric genius that continues to draw us back to the character. Jude Law and Rachel McAdams provide great support as Dr. Watson, and Sherlock’s love interest, Irene Adler. Although set in Victorian London, this film is full of big bangs, high-octane chases, and blood-pumping fights, and the mystery of Blackwood’s dark magic will keep you guessing. It may not be the best retelling, but it is very good fun.

For the fashion, dip into the drama of Victorian frocks and pattern with touches of lace and ruffles. Invest in an elegant black coat and a pair of leather brogue ankle boots for a timeless winter look. Picking up on Irene Adler’s flashes of bold colour, flowers, and the drama of the black magic in the accessories, will give captivating finishing touches that you won’t need to be a detective to notice…

Don Jon

Don Jon Stills

A film about a body-building, womanizing, porn-addict doesn’t really sound like most girls’ cup of tea, but Don Jon is much more than that. Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut doesn’t hold back – it is not your usual rom-com. Jon’s (Gordon-Levitt) life in New Jersey revolves around porn, going to the gym, porn, hooking up in clubs, porn, Sunday Mass with the family, and more porn. This is until he meets Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), a girl looking for the perfection of Hollywood romances, who is hot and elusive enough to make Jon give relationships a go. However, he can’t quite let go of porn. When Esther (Juilanne Moore) catches him watching it on his phone in a night class, it leads to an unlikely relationship which makes Jon question his reliance on pornography.

What is excellent about Don Jon is that it makes you think – how sexualised has society become? what does true love look like? does porn create anymore unrealistic expectations than all-star rom-coms? – whilst still being a really enjoyable film. Jon’s family are particularly funny, and music is used very wittily, with swelling violins contrasted with club beats. It’s one of a few films where I didn’t feel time passing: with stellar acting, slick production, and a tight script, I would watch it again in an instant. A sharp, witty, and thought-provoking debut from Gordon-Levitt – more please!

Wardrobe-wise, it has to be all about Scarlett Johansson as high-maintenance New Jersey girl, Barbara. To amp-up your day look, pair well-fitting skinny jeans with black heels, then add a tank top and leather jacket for a sexy, but relaxed, outfit. If your bum doesn’t quite live up to Scarlett’s (whose does?), the new denim leggings from Spanx may be just the thing. A little red dress will make you stand out, team with bouncy curls and a slick of eyeliner, and you’ll feel like a ‘dime’…
